Why is Mac OS 'copying' a 130GB folder 'again' when it's on the same disk?

I just copied a 130GB folder of stuff onto an external disk. I moved the folder to a subfolder within the same disk. Now it wants to copy the entire 130GB all over again for 3 hours? That makes no sense.
