How do I clear my hard drive of any personal info? (selling laptop)?

I am selling my laptop but I know that deleting the files and emptying the trash bin won't completely "erase" all the files. In addition, I've cleared my internet browser's history, password and info. Is there a way to clear the hard drive of any personal info without having to reinstall the OS because no discs came with the laptop (no OS or recovery).
