Is my pally worth playing?

Just started playin wow again and i got my pally ro 85 within the first week. now that im 85 i was gonna do ret dps but everyones tellin me it sucks. should i not even try to gear my ret set up or is it the kind of spec now where it only pulls good numbers if you have the right gear?
